George McKinsey and Enos Thomas in same Militia group

Just needed to have a place to put the information sent to me by Bruce Locken:

I noticed an Enos Thomas on the list men being discharged from George McKennie's milita group and that struck a note for some reason. I believe he is an ancestor/contemporary of the Thomas's who ended up in Newberry with George McKinsey.

Note that it is Lewis Moore's Company.  What year is this?  How old is George?  Why are they being discharged?

I found the following on ancestry.com:

TITLE: Virginia's Colonial Soldiers
CHAPTER: Courts Martial Records

Is this from Bockstruck's book?

Frederick County land transactions

Julie sent the following to the Shenandoah Mail list yesterday.  She gave me permission to post it on this blog so that I could add comments and maps and etc.  For my buddies who follow this blog, Patrick Duncan is mentioned in deed abstracts.  I can not remember if I already have that land transaction or not.  I will read and comment.

I rented the LDS film that had an index of Frederick co, deeds - below is my list of the entries.

My interest in EDWARDS is when Peter EDWARDS married Elizabeth LEHEW before 1787 in Shenandoah County,VA.  If anyone can add to this information it would be greatly appreciated.  Surnames of heirs in his will are LUCAS and STEPHENSON (no Edwards)

There are abstracts that I got from lookup requests after the list

Good luck
Julie

Comment from Marsha Moses
So on the property lands that I have on my main blog:

http://marshamoses.blogspot.com/2012/07/mckinney-and-geertsema-map.html

I am wondering if this Joseph Edwards Jun is neighbor to George McKenny instead of Patrick Duncan. This certainly looks like the same land with same neighbors.

There are some Edwards in the neighborhood of George McKinsey in Newberry County:  John Edwards has 350 acres 23 July 1766, Samuel Edwards has 190 acres 22 Sept 1784 next door to Nelson Duncan/Darkett 12 Aug 1772....His other neighbors are Peter Hawkins (who married Prudence Thomas --I suspect she is possible daughter of Edward Thomas of Old Frederick County--John Dobbins, Joseph Wright.  In parentheses on Samuel Edwards is (David Edwards Peter Julian).  I do not see a Joseph Edwards.

Who bought the McKinsey land in Newberry County, SC

I have grandchildren this weekend and can not do a post as complicated as the one I planned for next, so I am going to skip it and work on the question of whether it was OUR George McKinsey who was married to Sarah Moore who bought the land in Newberry County, SC.  Harriet has explained to me that she believes that it is his father who actually bought the land.....but I never "got it".  So this post addresses that question.

We agreed in an earlier post that Our George was born in 1762.  The land in SC was purchased in November 1764.  Well that is a no-brainer.  George (Our George) was only two years old when the land purchase was made.  His father, George, was a young man with young children.....or at least one child when he bought the land.  And his father was also named George.  We still don't have final proof that George who was married to Margaret who sold land in Old Frederick County is the same man who is buying land in Newberry County, SC.  But we are getting closer.

Here are the things that we all need to work on:

Have we looked for probate records for an older George McKenzie or his wife Margaret in Newberry County?

Did the land change hands via a will?  Do we know for sure that the land that is bought in 1764 is the land that Our George sells when he moves to Warren County, Ohio?

The George McKinsey who served in the Revolutionary War was paid for service as a Tory--do we know for sure that it was George married to Sarah?  Check the dates when George was paid compared to age .....

Edward Thomas and George McKinsey: Neighbors in both SC and Virginia

Next post I want to add the document from Harriet showing George and Edward side by side....also land transaction in which Edward is said to have been in SC....and map showing where George and Edward lived in Virginia.

For anyone reading this post, these are just notes to myself so I don't loose my train  of thought....send me other ideas for posts.

And anyone from Bush River Mail list can look at following post to see where George and his family lived in Newberry County:

http://marshamoses.blogspot.com/2012/11/thomas-family-in-nc-and-sc.html

Scroll down to big green map.  I did this map during our fun time in Newberry County the last time we met as a group.

Just found the document that I was looking for....so adding it even though I am not going to work on post.  You can move the document to see it better ....at least on my computer...if it is too far right for you, let me know and I'll work on it a bit.  The point of this document is that Edward Thomas is found in the list right next to George McKenny.  The list is NOT alphabetical.  It is possible that it is coincidental that they are side by side, but it is also possible that they were buddies who were together for the event.  William MerchantMarchant is also on the list.  He is found both in Old Frederick and also Newberry.  Are there other names on the list that you KNOW were in both places as well.

When I was researching the Thomas name because I thought that Sarah who married George McKinsey was a Thomas instead of a Moore,  I felt it very likely that Edward Thomas on this document shown below was the father of much of the Thomas family that is found in Newberry County records:  Nehemiah, Prudence who married Peter Hawkins, Timothy, Edward who lived in North Carolina with son Edward named in Nehemiah's will....can't do the rest from memory...

Birth of George McKinsey

Our George McKinsey married to Sarah Moore and living in Newberry County, SC during the Revolutionary War was probably born between 1760 and 1770 if we use the census of Warren County, Ohio in 1830 as a reference.  The household of George McKinsey is said to have had a male 60 to 70.  This birth suggestion would fit well with a man who had children between 1781-1805 if we use the earlier dates of that decade.  It also fits well with a man who was buried in Warren County, Ohio in 1841.  That would have made him in his late 70's or early 80's when he died.  There are earlier birth dates set forth by Ruby Mundell Wallace in her book of 1752 birth date in Scotland.

However, I am adopting the birth date of:

However, there is another birth date put forth by Miss Henrietta McKinsey of Ashtabula, Ohio who was the granddaughter of Patrick McKinsey (youngest son of George).  This date gives 1762 as the year of birth.  This date is shown in the family Bible owned by Henrietta.  She was born and raised on the farm that had belonged to George W. McKinsey and bought by her grandfather, Patrick, at the death of George.

Based on the census information I think that this is the very likely birth date for George McKinsey.

As for the place of birth for George, I have adopted Virginia:

Naomi (McKinsey) Spray was the only one of George’s children still living when the 1880 census was taken and she listed that her father was born in Virginia and her Mother was born in Georgia in the census.  This disagrees with the traditional story and Ruby was unable to verify either place of birth--nor either date.

Ruby had decided that Naomi's mother was Sarah Thomas.  So her lack of verification was based on the wrong maiden name for Sarah.  I do not believe that Sarah Moore McKinsey (George's wife) was born in Georgia.  She was most certainly born before her family moved to Wrightsboro, Ga in (insert date).   However, Naomi would have known that her mother's family had lived in Wrightsboro, Ga all of Naomi's life.  She was probably unaware of where they had lived before.  I think that Naomi's information was correct in her eyes.  She had probably heard stories of where her father had lived before his move to South Carolina as well.  I believe that this is another clue in support of the connection between our George McKinsey and Old Frederick County, Virginia.

If you would like to see the place of George's burial go to my blog post:

I have never proved that Sarah Moore McKinsey was buried in the Bush River Cemetery.  But I am as sure as I can be that that is the case.  For her likely burial place see my blog post:

I believe that Abigail Thomas and George McKinsey and the children of Sarah and George would have taken comfort from burying Sarah near Abigail's husband, Nehemiah Thomas before they left for Ohio.  And I have seen Nehemiah's grave in the Bush River cemetery for myself.  There is no doubt that Abigail and Nehemiah had ALWAYS been very close to George and Sarah's family!  And there is no doubt that Abigail remained close to the family for the rest of her life.  I don't know if there was never a stone because they knew no one in the family would be left in SC to visit the grave or if the stone has disappeared over the 200 years during which much of the time the cemetery was neglected.  But I find comfort myself in thinking that that is Sarah's final resting place.  For a map to find this cemetery go to blog post:

From the map you can see how close the cemetery was to the home of George and Sarah Moore McKinsey.

Land transactions in Frederick County, Virginia 1771

On a trip to the West Virginia Archives in 2014, I looked at a book that was abstracted by Amelia C. Gilreath called:  Frederick County, Virginia, Deed Book Series, Vol 5  Deed Books 15 and 16 1771-1775

on page 17 there are two land transactions that are of interest:

My gut feeling is that this is MY George McKennie who buys land in SC in 1773.

From a book by Carl W. Nichols called:  The Dutch Fork An Atlas of the Dutch Fork of Newberry District, SC:

page 148.
Shaw, Thomas
250 acres, 23 Nov 1764, 8:1  East side Bush River.  Map-P 62
150A (NE part) of survey sold 1773 to George McKinsey (Nby Deeds) D-2, 6).  Deed says remaining 100A (SW part) had been sold to Nelson Dunkin.  100 A part of survey sold by L&R 27 & 28 Sug 1790 by John Palmer to Abijah and Hugh Oneal (Nby Deeds D-374)

I do not think that it is a coincidence that George McKinsey/McKennie is a neighbor to Duncan in both neighborhoods.  I am going to use this blog to try to prove that George McKinsey who married Sarah Moore is connected to this Northern Virginia McKenny family.

I had already typed these transactions into my main blog with some explanatory information.  You can read this post at:
